Chunder God

Chunder God

By Carl Schienemann

Chunder God depicts Thor, the God of Thunder, as he is in Norse Mythology. Thor is, much in contrast to his pop-culture counter part, an arrogant, childish, and impatient fool of a God. As a secondary but not negligible commentary, the poem relates Thor’s irresponsible nature to modern consumerism. I find that today, those with the ability to positively impact climate change and sustainability, too often elect not to.

With obnoxious confidence you impose
On my property, to yet again flaunt that royal blood.
That dark thick liquid of the heir, like the fiery wildness of your hair,
Sweeps the land. Your competence as king is as questionable
As the colour of your blood.

Unquenchable Thor, your arrogance betrays you.
You claim your success upon the insurmountable,
It is you twice as relentless.
The Sangre Azul rejects you,
It consumes you; Drown in doubt.

Almighty Thor, dragons and giants,
My brothers you have slain;
Your belt held high as a testament to this.
Yet now, of all a cat you cannot lift,
You hoist and heave but cat’s paw is only high an inch.

Merciless Thor, that hate in your eyes,
The stare you harboured as my kin were impaled,
Now it has drained from your memory.
That old fragile lady you dare not face,
Since what age have you known of sympathy?

With undying despair you kneel at my foot;
Your youth expired by a thousand years,
Your stature and symbol were all but a ruse,
In the coming of chaos your might will always lose.
Impudent Thor, unable to conjure a thunderous conundrum once more.

As an international student I have been fortunate enough to see corners of the world and experience a handful of her cultures. I wouldn’t say I have adopted any of these cultures but I’d like to say I can draw from certain elements of each. As I grow as a student and as a person, I hope that I will continue to nurture a voice encompassing several cultures without taking them for granted.
